Mutations in the myostatin gene are strongly linked to increased muscling and produce "double-muscled" animals. We offer a test for the F94L, Q204X and nt821 variants as well as other rarer mutations on request.

We recommend SNP based parentage testing as this is the most accurate testing method and is recommended by the International Society of Animal Genetics (ISAG).

For backwards compatibility with existing parentage profiles we are also able to offer microsatellite based parentage testing.

The polled gene produces animals that are naturally hornless which is advantageous from a management perspective and reduces animal suffering from dehorning. Polled animals carry either 1 copy (heterozygous) or 2 copies (homozygous) of the polled gene which gives them a 50% or 100% chance of passing the polled trait on to offspring respectively.

Our coat colour test targets a mutation in the red factor gene that leads to black animals and can determine if a black animal carries the red gene (and therefore is able to have red coloured offspring) or not.

Sheep

Animals carrying the double-muscling gene (or MyoMax) have been shown to produce carcasses with increased lean meat yield. Our test determines if an animal carries 1 or 2 copies of the gene which affects the increase in muscling and the probability the gene is passed on to offspring.

Breeding for genetic resistance is the most effective and cost-efficient way of dealing with Scrapie, to which there is no cure or treatment once an animal is infected. Testing allows breeders to select for the resistant version of the gene and minimise the risk of Scrapie infection within their flock.

How to Order

1

Sampling

You must collect a sample of genetic material for us to test from, we accept a wide range of sample types:

Tissue samples taken using a tissue sampling eartag are the best recommended sample format due to decreased risk of sample cross-contamination or mix-up. TL Biolabs recommends the Caisley GenoTag System for tissue sampling, a sample is collected easily at the same time as the animal is tagged and is immediately sealed into a barcoded tube that can then be submitted to the lab. The tube is robust and tamper-evident meaning there is no possibility of human error leading to sample mixups and no chance of contamination.

Genotags are available as either the primary ministry tag or as a management tag. Caisley Vet Kits are also available that collect a tissue sample without leaving a tag in the ear.

Please contact Caisley for more information or to order.
Blood samples are accepted as either a purple capped K2E tube or dried blood spot card. Please DO NOT send red capped blood tubes as these will not be accepted. Blood should be collected from the vein under the animals tail and can be done either by a vet or a the breeder. Blood collection tubes, needles and sterile gloves can be supplied on request or ordered online.
Hair samples are only accepted in exceptional circumstances, this is not a sample format we recommend due to very low amounts of DNA and its ease of cross-contamination which can lead to incorrect results.

Please contact us before submitting hair samples.

Order Form

Please print off and fill in the official order form with your contact details and the details of the animals to be tested. Samples should be marked with either the eartag number or animal name so we are able to easily match them up with the order form.

This is required for us to generate the results certificates and orders with missing details may be delayed.

Most of our tests are completed with a 5 working day turnaround time. Results and certificates are sent out by email as soon as testing is complete.
